S-adenosyl-l-methionine, or SAMe for short, is a natural compound that is produced in the liver from the amino acid methionine. Synthesis of SAMe in the body requires adequate levels of folic acid and vitamin B12, and individuals who are deficient in these nutrients may also be deficient in SAMe.
