This week we have been talking about the best nutrients to help our students thrive in the academic world.  The brain is the most nutrient-dependent organ in the body and each day needs a ready supply of all the proteins, healthy fats, low glycemic carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to encourage focus, memory, concentration and good behavior.

With the busy lives modern Americans lead, both children and adults are turning to fast food options or cheap, processed foods to feed the family. These are the high glycemic and trans fat-filled foods causing the obesity and chronic disease epidemic in both adults and children alike.  As parents, we must begin by modeling the healthy changes. This school year, make it a goal to begin replacing the sodas and junk foods with a fridge and pantry full of better options.

·         Fish – wild salmon is a great choice!

·         Berries – highest antioxidant fruit

·         Broccoli – add cheese if necessary

I love this idea!! Unfortunately, now days most schools are peanut and tree nut free. So almond butter, peanuts, peanut butter, nuts etc., you are not allowed to bring to school. We have attended both private and public schools. The only butter I am allowed to bring to my sons school is sunbutter, sunflower seed butter.
